Herradura: Premium tequila from the heart of Mexico.
The tequila of Herradura has a long history in the warm, dusty plains of Mexico. Founded in 1870 by Feliciano Romo, Herradura lies at the foothills of the Sierra Madre Mountains in the small town of Amatitan, the heart of tequila country. As the story goes, Romo was traveling across this area and stumbled across a horseshoe bathed by the sun’s rays and it was at this moment that he decided this was to be the location for his dream, which he named Herradura, Spanish for ‘horseshoe’. 100% AgaveAll the tequilas from Herradura are made from 100% agave and with the greatest care and precision to produce only the very finest tequila. Agave is part of the lily family, not cactus as many would believe. As is true of the sparkling wines of Champagne and the brandies of Cognac, but different to almost every other spirit, tequila can only be made in Mexico. At Herradura, the agave are harvested by hand and are cooked in clay ovens, milled, and then spend 96 hours fermenting which provides for a fuller flavour. Only the naturally occurring yeasts on the agave are used in the fermentation process. The liquid is then twice distilled and is aged at 88 proof in oak barrels. Caramel colouring is never added to Herradura, instead, the colour comes solely from maturation in the barrel. The quality of the range of Herradura tequilas is exactly the same, the only difference is how long each are aged. The Herradura CollectionHerradura Silver or Blanco is aged for less than 59 days with the average being 45 days, in white oak barrels where it becomes a light, approachable tequila that is perfect backdrop for an array of exciting cocktails. Reposado (“rested”) is a category of tequila invented by Herradura. In order to be called Reposado, the tequila must be aged for at least 60 days, but at Herradura, it spends eleven months in wood barrels. The aromas of oak, cinnamon and spice lead to a mild palate and an easy, dry finish. Introduced in 1974, this was the first commercially available Reposado. The Herradura Añejo (“aged”) is matured in white oak barrels for twenty-five months, even though this category is only legally required to age for twelve. To fully appreciate this tequila it should be sipped as a fine Cognac is, which reveals the complex layers of agave, vanilla, caramel and hints of pear. The prize of the collection is the Seleccion Suprema, an Extra Añejo, made completely by hand with only the very best agaves and with the oldest oven. Under the watchful eye of the Master Distiller, the tequila rests and matures for over four years and emerges as an elegant, rich, intense archetype. With hints of dried wood, cinnamon and rose petals, it is truly a sophisticated experience. Discover a sense of history and finest craftsmanship in the tequilas of Herradura.
