Bruichladdich Distillery, already respected for their single malt whiskey, is now producing some of the finest and most innovative rum available anywhere in the world.

For the true rum connoisseur, the selections currently being offered by Rengade Rums are not to be missed. These are perhaps the most interesting rums currently available in relatively wide distribution. Un-chill filtered at the Bruichladdich (pronounced brook-LADDIE) Distillery on the Isle of Islay in Scotland, these limited editions have the potential to popularize single-vintage rum amongst a new generation.

Limited Edition, Single Vintage Rum from Renegade Rums

Renegade Rums produces limited edition, single-vintage rums from distilleries throughout the Caribbean and the Americas. What makes these rums so unique? For starters, many of the casks have been hand-selected from traditional single distilleries that are no longer in operation, making them an unparalleled choice for the collector and connoisseur. Anyone who dreams of travelling the rum-producing regions of the Caribbean and Americas sampling from the oldest, family-owned distilleries will be thrilled by what Renegade has to offer from places like Guyana, Panama, Jamaica, Barbados, Grenada, and Trinidad.

Additional Cask Evolution Rums

In addition to the using only the most interesting and authentic rums matured in American oak casks, Renegade Rums is infusing the very concept of rum with vitality and originality by further maturing each rum in select French oak casks previously used for wine, port or Madeira. The process is known as “Additional Cask Evolution” or, simply, ACE. This supplementary maturation period, thanks to the the expert guidance of master distiller (and three time distiller of the year) Jim McEwan, who is a cooper by trade since the age of 15, is what really sets these rums apart. The result is a smooth texture with a complex finish that lingers delightfully.

All Renegade Rums are reduced to 46% strength with Islay spring water and naturally bottled without coloration or chill-filtration, which helps them retain their natural cask flavors.

Bruichladdich’s Mark Reynier

Rum lovers have Mark Reynier, CEO of Bruichladdich, to thank for Renegade Rums. Without being too maudlin, Reynier deserves much credit for helping to save “real rum” from the marketing machines of the most commonly known rum labels, not to mention the perils of Coca-Cola.

While some may find it odd that a Scottish distillery has taken an interest in rum, Reynier actually sees many parallels between the world of whiskey and rum. “The Rum market is similar to the whisky world in many ways,” he says. “Both are dominated by multinationals, big marketing, and blended spirit destined for mixers and cocktails.” The result is the tragic disappearance of small, family-owned distilleries and individual stills across both Scotland and the Caribbean. Largely thanks to Reynier, a new generation of rum-lovers will now demand artisanal, single-vintage rums.

"Many rum estates were also founded by Scots such as the Sterlings, McDonald-Hill, MacFarquharson in the seventeenth century," Reynier adds, "and many retained Scottish place names such as Hampden and Westerhall."

The 2008 Renegade Rum Collection

The 2008 Renegade Rum collection is made up of six limited edition bottlings. Each is from a single estate and single vintage and only 900 to 1500 numbered bottles of each was released for worldwide distribution.
